The Grapevine: Talk on a Few of My Favorite Things

By Rosalyn Queen on December 17, 2020 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

I am going to share with you a couple of items in my collection that have had a place on my home for many years.  They have moved with me four times, but they like me have sustained.

First, there is my nativity set.  On the bottom of each piece is engraved 1976, so that makes the set about 34 years old.  The set is ceramic and is finished in a white marble paint.  At that time ceramics was very popular, and I decided that I would try my hand at it.  Well, I did get it completed and it was my first and last venture in ceramics. The set has about 20 pieces to it which include the baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the three Kings a Shepherd, camels, goats, and cows.  Every year I find a predominate place in my home for them.  I very reverently unpack them and then at the end of the season, I lovingly pack them away for the next year.  Probably my favorite thing.

Next there is the two little male angels done up in red with messy hair and holding an electric candle.  I would guess that these little boys are at least 55 years old.  I got them to represent Mike and Marty for their second Christmas. If my memory serves me right, I purchased them from Sears at the Fairmont Mall.  Probably, the next year, I decided that my theme for decorations would be candy ornaments.  They seemed to be very popular that year, so I purchased the artificial suckers, ice cream cones, gum drops and gingerbread men.  I added a few real candy canes, and this really made a “delicious” tree.

Now a few of my favorite things have restored the spirit in me.  Maybe I will have a visitor or two, but I intend to adhere to the restrictions.  My apartment is small, so I have placed my tree with just lights on my patio in front of the glass doors, a wreath on the door and a few Christmas throws complete my decorations and I forgot, my bedroom has a Christmas theme with a bedspread, pillows, and a few of my collection of angels.

Please join me in getting into the spirit, do not be a bah humbug.  Get out “A Few Of Your Favorite Things.”

My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Robinette who fell and had surgery.  Prayers also for Jack Anderson.

I remember in prayer the men who gave their lives in the Monongah Mine explosion, especially my grandfather, Giovanni Oliverio.

My grandkids Hollie and Hunter are 25, Miranda is 26 and I think Mike and Marty are 58.  Where have the years gone?  These too are a few of my favorite things.
