The Grapevine: The Real Celebration of July 4

By Rosalyn Queen on June 30, 2015 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

FIREWORKS!  PICNICS! SWIMMING!  CONCERTS!  You know what this means?  None other than the Fourth of July!

This is the time of year when we really look forward to an outing.  If we do not go anywhere else this summer, we go on the Fourth. What use to be a picnic at Audra Park or Nutter Fort or the Veterans Park has now turned into an outdoor barbeque in our back yard. And most of us will end the day with our lawn chairs or even sitting on the ground to watch a beautiful display of fireworks.

Have you ever really given some thought as to why we celebrate the Fourth of July?  With the world in the situation it is in, it really would be a great idea to think about it.I urge all of you to rededicate yourself to the meaning of the Declaration of Independence.  So much has been given for us to live the way we do and for all the rights we enjoy. It is time that we ensure that our children and grandchildren will have the opportunity to enjoy them.

On the evening of July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted.  At the signing John Hancock urged "There must be no pulling different ways.  We must hang together."  Ben Franklin replied " Yes. We must indeed hang together or surely we will hang separately."

Remember to hang out your flag and tell the young children just how much it means to you.  Buy some little flag pins and see that each of the children get one to wear.  The Fourth is the day to display your pride in our country.  You know you might even get copies of the Declaration and read it yourself and then read it to the children.  Just how much of it do you remember?

If you are planning a trip please be careful and be sure to wear your seat belts.  A very happy and safe Fourth of July to all my readers and until next week "Now You Have heard It Through The Grapevine."
