The Grapevine: Thoughts on Thanksgiving, Handling Five December Birthdays, Holiday Dinners and More

By Rosalyn Queen on November 18, 2021 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

I do not know if this is a saying or not, but it seems sufficient to me.  “You Cannot Keep an Old Dog Down.”  Today it seems to apply to me, with Thanksgiving coming up and the first day of the holiday season, I have taken my decorations out and set the scene.  I also found my Thanksgiving tops, so that whenever you see me, I will surely be decked out for Thanksgiving.

Coming from the old school, I refuse to put Christmas decorations up until after Thanksgiving. I will have to admit that I did start a little shopping this week.  But first let me give you a little explanation.

The first of December hits me with five birthdays.  We will be celebrating Miranda Lang’s, Mike and Marty Queen and Holli and Hunter Queen’s birthdays.  So, I got them out of the way and while out shopping added a few Christmas gifts to the list.

Well maybe you can’t keep this old dog down, but this old dog just cannot go like she used to. No more of those all-day shopping sprees.

I want to help you fulfill a gift for your hairdresser, your cleaning lady, your paper boy, your special neighbors, and anyone else you want to extend a little kindness too.  Order a pita piata from the PWA (304-624-6881).  It will be on a Fiesta dessert plate, wrapped and set off with a holiday ribbon.  You can purchase these for $10.

We will be making a limited supply so be sure to get your order in.  Now this old dog just wants to say, “that I think ours are one of the best in the area.” We are still using the original recipe of Lena Garrett, who was one of the first to use the pie roll method instead of the jelly roll method. If I close my eyes. I can taste the mixture of wine, cinnamon honey, nuts, and raisins. They will be ready the first week in December.

Talking about shopping, just think if you would be lucky enough to win the wreath to be raffled off with $500 worth of gift certificates attached.  Just about enough to cover your entire gift list. Chances are $1 and the wreath will be raffled off at the PWA Christmas and anniversary dinner. We will also be raffling off the large red, white, and black quilt, chances six for $5.

Our Holiday dinner will be on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.  A wonderful meal is being prepared by Johnny Joe Madia.  Admission is free due to the generosity of our sponsors, Davis Funeral Home. The Dianne Urchak family and Laura Goff Davis.  Guests are welcome.  We will also be observing our 100th anniversary and our new officers will be installed. Mike Queen, representative from the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office will be assisting us with this event.  Be sure to make your reservation – 304-624-6881.

I would be remiss if I did not address the pandemic situation, but we will take every precaution to adhere to the restrictions.  Our facility is sparkling clean, and we will use suggested seating.

A big salute to all our military who have served our country.  Be sure to thank them.  Get in the holiday spirit, remember we have so much to be thankful for, just take a look around.

Stay happy, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
