The Grapevine: Weather, City Library Recommended Books, Movie Reviews, Easter Bread, and a Bit More

By Rosalyn Queen on February 23, 2023 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This time of year it is up and down, in and out and so on and so on.  And by this, I mean the weather and the temperature and just about everything else going on in our lives.

We want to get rid of our winter clothes but as soon as we do the temperature changes to freezing.  It is still too soon to get our seeds set for our gardens.

I really enjoyed the nice warm weather we had last week but did not tolerate the rain and the drop in the temperature.

I am going to do a book review for you and also a movie review.  Most of my readers know that I am an avid reader and have been known to start on a book and finish it in one setting.  You also know that Danielle Steele is my favorite author.  I have just finished her last two novels and was looking for something else to read.

The wonderful staff at the Bridgeport Library suggested that I try Barbara Delinsky’s books because she writes in the same style as Steele.  I brought home two books and have just completed reading Before And Again.  It is a story about relationships we find ourselves in.  It can be mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, or good and bad friends.  It relates to us what kind of sacrifices we are willing to make to sustain these relationships through good times and bad.

I recommend this book for a good read this time of year. The only difference I found in her style and Steele’s style is that she seemed to describe items in too much detail for me.  I am ready to start on the second book, “Chances Are.”  I will preview it for you next week.

Reading, and I mean enjoyable reading, is especially good for us this time of year.  Soon we will be able to sit on our decks and talk to our neighbors and to watch the birds and the flowers peeking their heads up in full bloom. At this time, we will not do much reading.

Another thing we can do to pass the time is go to the movies.  This past week my son and I went to see “I Wanna Dance.”  This is the Whitney Houston story.  The young lady who played her part had a beautiful voice and I was told she did all the songs and did not use a voice over. I do not know how much was truth or fiction but there was certainly a lot I learned about her life.

If you go to the movies in the afternoon there is a special rate, and they also offer a rate to seniors.  I know we can watch movies at home, but it is just not the same as going to the theatre.  The phone rings, the dog wants fed, we fall asleep halfway through, we feel bad for wasting time so we get up and dust or fold the clothes and miss half of the movie. So please plan on going to the theatre for once. You owe it to yourself.

The season of Lent is here, and I hope you will be preparing for Easter.  Since the price of eggs is so high, go to the Dollar Store and pick up a few bags of plastic eggs to use for decorating and for the annual Easter egg hunt.

My daughter Leslie was at the Strip District in Pittsburgh and purchased anise for me to use for my Easter bread.  It is not the black seed, but it is the brown seed and has a wonderful smell.  Easter just is not Easter without Easter bread.

Just remember Spring will be here soon so keep busy not to get depressed with the weather changes. Take care, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
