The Bridgeport Cemetery will have more than its regular share of visitors on Friday. In fact, upwards of a hundred individuals will be at the cemetery located just off Route 131 near Route 50.

 

There isn’t a funeral. There are no formal ceremonies taking place.

 

However, there is going to be a full display of respect for the men and women who have served our country. And, the main group leading a tribute to veterans who have been laid to rest will be youngsters from the Bridgeport community.

 

According to Tricia Bombardiere, the cemetery manager for the city, Bridgeport Youth Football members will be taking part in placing flags on the graves of service personnel ahead of Monday’s Memorial Day.

 

“This will be our second year of placing flags on the veterans laid to rest here at our cemetery. This year we have doubled the amount volunteering,” said Bombardiere.

 

According to Bombardiere, as of Monday there were 85 members of the league volunteering their time. She expects the numbers to climb.

 

“I love the idea that we are bringing all youth football team and cheer squads together including coaches and parents,” said Bombardiere. “I received a lot of positive feedback last year. I’ve heard by volunteering and honoring our veterans that it made a huge impact not only on the children but the parents and coaches.”

 

The placing of the flags will begin shortly after 4:15 p.m. Friday. Individuals are asked to gather at the cemetery office.

 

Bombardiere said you don’t have to be a youth football member to volunteer. Anyone of any age that would like to volunteer is welcome to do so and can reach Bombardiere by calling 304-842-2641.

 

“Parents have said they loved the idea of getting their children involved and they even had a history lesson afterwards. I’m not sure how much this is talked about in the schools, but I believe it’s very important for the kids to volunteer and honor each and every veteran in our cemetery as well as active duty who continue to sacrifice for us and the willingness to serve,” she said. “I’ve also heard parents say that they were able to show their children relatives laid to rest here.”

 

There is a bit of a reward for the youngsters upon completion. They will be treated to hot chocolate and snacks for their efforts.

 

Bombardiere encourages the community to visit the cemetery to see the flags placed out in honor of our veterans.
