Indians Stand Pat in Latest WVSSAC Prep Football Rankings as End of Regular Season Approaches

By Jeff Toquinto on October 10, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport’s win over previously 4-1 and Class AA No. 10 North Marion didn’t move the Indians in this week’s WVSSAC football standings. The Indians, who were No. 5 last week, remain there this week following the 40-22 win at Rachel Friday.

That doesn’t mean the 6-1 Indians didn’t gain any ground in the computer-based standings. The Tribe had a rating of 10 last week and have a rating of 10.43 this week thanks to bonus points picked up from beating teams that also managed to win this past Friday.  That leaves them just off the mark of undefeated Liberty at the No. 4 spot.

The Mountaineers, 6-0, are one of just three undefeated teams in Class AA and earned a victory over winless Roane County. LHS currently has a power rating of 10.83.

Fairmont Senior, at 6-1, leapfrogged the Mountaineers after its win at Weir. The Polar Bears are at No. 3 in the Class AA rankings and have a power rating of 10.86.

The top two teams, Bluefield (7-0) and Mingo Central (6-0), remain No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. The Beavers are coming off of a huge win against Point Pleasant at home to solidify their position at the top of the standings.

Bridgeport’s opponent a week from Friday, 5-1 Keyser, is in at No. 7. Also ranked is Bridgeport’s final foe of the regular season, Lincoln. The 4-2 Cougars come in at No. 11.

If the postseason began today, Bridgeport would host North Marion, who dropped from No. 10 to No. 12, at Wayne Jamison Field. The second round foe would be against the winner of Liberty or Winfield (No. 12, Lincoln holds the tiebreaker), which means if the Mountaineers would win the Indians would be on the road in Harrison County and if the Generals would win it would mean a home contest at Jamison Field.

No other local teams would qualify today for the ‘AA’ playoffs. However, Philip Barbour at 5-2 is at No. 18 and Robert C. Byrd is at No. 20.

In Class A, South Harrison is ranked No. 2. The Hawks, 6-0, trail 7-0 East Hardy and are just ahead of No. 3 St. Marys.

The WVSSAC poll is the one that counts for postseason positioning. The top 16 teams make the playoffs in all three classifications with the final seeding determining who hosts playoff games and who is on the road.

BHS is also ranked in the top 10 in Class AA in the MetroNews poll. That poll, which can be found HERE, is voted on by the statewide media and shows how teams in all three classifications are perceived statewide. It has no impact on the postseason.
