Another list is out and, once again, the City of Bridgeport has fared extremely well. This time, it’s on the retirement front.
Bridgeport found itself ranked in the top half of the top 10 cities in West Virginia for the best cities for individuals to consider retiring to. Unlike some of the Web site rankings of restaurants, destinations and other genres that are often based on opinion, this ranking used various factors to come up with their top 10.
The study was done by the Web site The site is a financial technology company providing personal finance advice on the web. The site offers free and personalized tools to empower individuals to make personal finance decisions around home buying, retirement, taxes and more.
According to their rankings, Bridgeport is the third best city in the Mountain State to retire to. Bridgeport trailed Princeton and Hurricane, respectively. Two other local cities made the list. Elkins and Buckhannon also made the cut at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
So how did SmartAsset come up with the rankings?
The Web site used three regional factors to determine quality of life. The first item involved at state and local tax rates, considering two types of taxes: income and sales. The site calculated effective rates based on a typical retiree, earning $35,000 annually (from retirement savings, social security or part-time employment), and spending their disposable income on taxable goods.
Second, the Web site determined the number of doctors’ offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per thousand residents in each area. And last, the Web site found the number of seniors in each area as a percentage of the total population.
From that the analysis saw a ranking of counties and cities on those factors calculating an average for each area and weighting the trio of factors equally.
