Although not Scrapped, BHS Needs More Players for Alumni Football Game with RCB to Take Place

If Bridgeport High School alum Zach Nixon had his way, he would be ready to lace the cleats up one more time and matchup with Robert C. Byrd in yet another football game. And last year, he had all intents that such a game would happen – and he still has those intents.

When Nixon found out about the group Alumni Football USA that helped manage alumni football games, the plan was to have the Indians and Eagles go at it. The plan, for now, is still to have the game May 15 at 7 p.m. at a yet to be unnamed location.

There is, however, one problem. As of now, Nixon said there aren’t enough BHS alumni registered for the game that have paid the entry fee  of $75. Nixon said a minimum of 25 former player or any alumnus of BHS – you don’t have to be a former player – have yet to pay the fee as only 19 have committed on the financial end.

“We actually have more than 25 registered, but we have to get at least 25 to pay the entry fee,” said Nixon. “We have until the end of March to makeit happen.

The$75 covers the cost of jerseys and all necessary equipment with the exception of two items. Nixon said players are responsible for their own mouthpiece and shoes and/or cleats depending on where the game will be played.

“We hope to play the game at (Wayne) Jamison Field, but we won’t be able to make that determination until we have enough players officially in the fold,” said Nixon.

Nixon said there are 18 others along with himself that have committed. According to Nixon, those that are officially in are Travis Paul, Mike DeRosa, Jeremy Hinzman, Matt Hess, Ryan Compton, Ryan Cook, D’Mitri Savoy, Chris Wilmoth, Nate Mazurik, Justin Findley, Daniel Fischer, Tim Lindsey, Terrell Coleman, Jared McCray, Billy Milnes, Kris Grant, Blake Stire and Cory Leonard.

“I think I’ve got a few more on the hook and Travis Paul said he has two or three as well, but we have to have them to pay the registration fee or it won’t happen,” said Nixon.

Once the initial players have signed up and paid the fee, others can register and pay as well. However, if you pay on the day of the game the entry fee goes up to $100.

As for the opposition, Nixon said Robert C. Byrd is ready to go.

“They’ve got more than enough. I believe they have more than 40 signed up and more than 30 that have paid the fee,” said Nixon. “We had several of our guys back out due to work conflicts, but we hope to get there.”
