While events continue to be canceled across the area and state, one highly popular event in Bridgeport is now officially on. After earlier announcing a postponement, the 24th Annual Wayne Jamison-Mary Reppert Memorial Golf Tournament is on the schedule.

According to Organizer Travis Jones, who serves as the “Voice of the Indians” on the football radio broadcasts, the event will be held July 16. Once again, it will be played at the Bridgeport Country Club.

“It’s on, and we’re happy to bring it back once again,” said Jones. “This is an event a lot of people look forward to.”

Jones said groups can sign up for the event soon by checking the bridgeportindiansfootball.com Web site. The tournament will have registration at 11:30 a.m. on July 16 with the standard shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Other standard features will also be in place. There will be a silent auction as well as skill prizes during the tournament. The event will conclude with a steak dinner with the steaks provided by Young and Stout.

There will be some non-standard features as well due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jones said the tournament will adhere to social distancing requirements and the requirements spelled out by Governor Jim Justice and the state for golf courses, which could change by the time of the tournament.

“We’ll also have dining option inside of the Country Club and we’ll have outdoor dining to accommodate the limitations currently in place or ones that may be in place at the time of the tournament,” said Jones. “We’ll also have a takeout option available to help everyone be as comfortable as possible.”

Jones said he is anticipating a big crowd. In fact, he said he anticipates it rivaling last year’s gathering.

“Last year was our biggest field we ever had. We almost got to the point where we had to nearly turn people away,” said Jones. “I’ve already had people contacting me because we typically hold this in June and so I do think this has a lot of heightened interested because it’s an event that’s on as opposed to the norm of cancellation.”

As always, proceeds will benefit a pair of scholarships given in honor of Jamison and Reppert. Jamison was the long-time Indians football coach that produced four state championships who taught at the school, while Reppert was a long-time teacher and fervent supporter of the Tribe football program affectionally known as “Memaw.”

The scholarships are presented each year by the Bridgeport High School Alumni & Friends Foundation. The scholarships, funded by the football program, go to an outstanding member of the BHS senior football class.

The cost to participate is $100 per person or $400 for foursome. Hole sponsorships are available as well.
