City Dog Park Soon to Get Long-Needed Addition

Last week, for those that were utilizing Bridgeport’s vast walking trail system near Hinkle and Deegan Lakes or may have been near the area of the dog park, you may have noticed a whole lot of equipment and earth moving taking place.

For those thinking there was a problem that needed fixed, they would be wrong. The city was doing a project that has been requested for some time.

“We ran a water line down there from the lakes area to provide water for animals as well as for others that utilize that facility,” said City Manager Kim Haws.

Haws recently briefed Council on the project saying that, weather permitting, it should be done in 30 days at the absolute latest. According to Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton, the project was wrapped up way ahead of that.

“The installation of the water line to the dog park is complete,” said Burton. “The only thing not done is the installation of the fountain, which will be completed once the weather becomes more cooperative.”

Burton said the line in question was a one-inch line. The fountain will service both four-legged and two-legged visitors to the park or anyone walking in that general area.

“It’s a two-in-one fountain. The fountain we’ll be installing will have a bowl at the bottom for the dogs and a regular drinking apparatus at the top for people,” said Burton.

The Bridgeport Public Works Department utilized their own manpower and equipment to install the line. Burton said that group will return once things heat up and dry up to do the landscaping work. The Parks and Recreation staff, said Burton, will handle the landscaping.

While the work was done in areas away from the trail, Burton said it was likely noticeable. He also said the water line work wasn’t the only thing the city’s Public Works staff addressed.

“The road going into the dog park was upgraded and also widened just a little bit. They brought in additional gravel, smoothed out the roadway and took the hump out that was there,” said Burton. “We think this will enhance the experience of those that use the dog park.”
