Forget National Cheese Pizza Day, City Event Slated to Aid Residents on National Voter Registration Day

September is home to some pretty unique days. Some such as 9/11 Remembrance Day are touching. Others, such as Cheese Pizza Day and National Butterscotch Pudding Day are, well a bit odd.

While many in Bridgeport and the area paid their respects on 9/11, there wasn’t any recognized events or any planned events for cheese pizza or butterscotch pudding days. With the month not yet over, there’s plenty more days to come and Bridgeport is taking part in one of them.

National Voter Registration Day is coming September 25. The day is not a new one, but has been in place for several years and is held the fourth Tuesday of every month. This year, the city is involved.

“We are doing a little promotion at the Bridgeport Public Library to try and encourage people to register to vote for the upcoming election taking place in November,” said Community Development Director and former City Clerk Andrea Kerr. “On top of that, the city has two elections next year.”

The general national election will take place In November. Next year, the city will have the levy election in February and then the municipal election in June when the seat of City Recorder Hank Murray and Council members Jeff Smell, Lowell “L.J.” Maxey and Dustin Vincent will all be up.

“It’s important that we help promote voter registration to get the best turnout we can for those elections,” Kerr said. “This is part of the process of figuring out the best way to do that.”

Part of the process is celebrating National Voter Registration Day at the library. The event will run from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and, as expected, there will be individuals in place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on that day to assist from the city and from the office of Harrison County Clerk Susan Thomas, Kerr said.

“I’ve talked with Susan Thomas and she was more than happy to agree to be there to help facilitate things and get individuals registered to vote,” said Kerr. “She’s also going to bring a voting booth to show people how to vote electronically.”

For those already registered who aren’t familiar with – or didn’t like the electronic process – this is a good chance to get some practice and a tutorial from the top election official in Harrison County. Kerr said she hopes many will take advantage of it.

“Some voters are timid to try the electronic voting. The sample machine that will be there is aimed at allowing people to be more comfortable with it,” said Kerr.

Kerr encourages anyone from the community to come out and register, practice on the machine or ask questions. The time frame was set to allow high schoolers who are eligible to vote to register and also allow individuals to get there after school and after work.
