Roughly two decades after she started what is arguably the greatest run of state titles in Bridgeport High School’s competitive history, advisor Barbara “Barb” Judy ended it with a bang this weekend. On Saturday, the Indians’ Quiz Bowl team captured the Class AA-A state championship at Capital High School in Charleston.

“I was very pleased with this team.  They have worked hard all year, usually competing against (Class) AAA teams,” said Judy. “They have all grown in knowledge in their individual strengths.  This is the final round for this year for those students in Quiz Bowl.”

Bridgeport was able to gain yet another crown thanks to a strong showing in both the morning and afternoon sessions. In the morning, the Indians upended Wahama, Lincoln, Ravenswood, Parkersburg Catholic and Charleston Catholic. Thanks to the strong showing, BHS earned the top seed and a bye in the first round of the single elimination tournament.

Once Bridgeport began afternoon action, the solid effort continued. BHS went on to topple No. 4 Parkersburg Catholic and No. 2 Charleston Catholic to clinch the title. Judy said there was no match against Ravenswood, but that team did win their consolation contest to finish in third place behind BHS and Charleston Catholic.

BHS was able to get the win thanks to the leadership of co-captains Danny Keough and Jeff McCullough. The duo helped lead the rest of the team – consisting of Alexander Bradley -Popovich, Amna Haque, Noah Romay and Fisher Rector – to the winner’s circle.

Many of the teams the Tribe faced this year in Class AAA fared well in the Class AAA portion of the competition. Capital took first place, Ripley was second, Parkersburg came in third and University finished fourth.

Judy’s teams at BHS have consistently won – or finished near the top – of Quiz Bowl competition for nearly two decades. In fact, the Indians were dominant even during their time competing as a Class AAA school for several years. With yet another title to her credit, Judy leaves with her championship legacy in place. However, she’ll miss more than just the victories.

“I would like to thank all of the parents who have helped chaperone and transport their children and the teachers who have taught them,” said Judy. “I will miss the fellowship of the parents and other academic coaches I have worked with for so long and I wish the students the best of luck as they go onwards in their academic endeavors.”
