New Parking Guidelines Could Change Your Game Experience at Jamison Field

For those individuals who have always tried to get to a Bridgeport High School football game, a big track meet or other sporting event and park along the roadway for an easy exit or because there’s nowhere else available to park, there are some changes you need to know about. The grassy area between Johnson Avenue and the Jamison Field parking lot, the grassy area across Johnson Avenue and the media heading down from Johnson Avenue from the entrance of Woodside Heights are off limits for parking.

“The signs on the grassy area directly in front of the parking lot, I believe, just went up this week,” said Bridgeport High School assistant Principal and Athletic Director Matt DeMotto. “The signs across the road way and (down from Woodside Heights) were put up some time ago by the City of Bridgeport.”

DeMotto said the signs address an issue that has been in place for several years. And it’s one that’s been brought to the administration’s attention and likely those of city officials.

“We’ve had people mention that people parking in that area have caused problems, but it’s usually a big game at the field,” said DeMotto. “Honestly, when you hear it the most is at a really big track meet.”

The problem on the grassy area between Johnson Avenue and Jamison Field is that it blocks a line of sight at times to safely navigate onto the roadway. DeMotto said this should eliminate that problem.

“The danger is that as you’re trying to leave and there are cars piled on that grass you can’t see anyone coming,” said DeMotto. “You have to creep out slowly and hope the person coming your direction is paying attention and can see you. I think we’ve been really lucky that someone hasn’t been hurt there and we felt that it was a matter of time before someone was hurt. There was a very severe blind spot leaving the field for many and this is going to eliminate that.”

The signs that are up closest to Jamison Field indicate the consequences. Those were installed by the Harrison County Board of Education, while the others were put up – as mentioned – by the City of Bridgeport.

“There are other places to park, but you may have to walk a little more,” said DeMotto. “There’s also the option of buying parking from the Boosters for the parking lot itself.”
