Bridgeport High School’s domination of the Class AA-A portion of Quiz Bowl competition continued this past weekend. On Saturday, the Indians finished first among the “AA-A” schools in the annual Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament at Nitro High School.

The meet consisted of 22 teams, but not 22 schools. Several schools, including Bridgeport, fielded more than one team. While BHS was the top-ranked Class AA school, it finished fourth overall among the 22 teams that included multiple Class AAA foes.

Bridgeport was edged out by Parkersburg, Capital and University. It was the Indians’ A team that finished first in “AA-A” and fourth overall. That Bridgeport squad is captained by Jeff McCullough and includes team members Danny Keough, Anna Haque, Noah Romay, Woody Cavallo and Emory Smith.

The team competed in the meet that had a similar format of previous years. The competition featured a round robin style in the morning and then a "grouped" competition in the afternoon.  In the afternoon, teams were grouped with other teams of similar abilities.

Bridgeport’s B team also fared well. Once again, the B unit was comprised entirely of freshmen students and managed to outscore several teams that featured upperclassmen in the mix.  Members of the team were Raeanne Beckner, Lilah Kimble, Vincent Pinti, Joseph Holbert, David Walker and Dalton Colton.

BHS physics teacher Keith Ross is the coach for the Quiz Bowl program.

The next quiz bowl tournament date is not set, but part of the team will be competing at Fairmont on Dec. 10 in the RESA VII Science Bowl.  Ross is planning on taking two teams into that competition.
