BMS Listed Again among Top Three Middle Schools in West Virginia on National Education Website

For the last two years, Bridgeport Middle School was the number one ranked middle school in the state of West Virginia, according to the Web site schooldigger.com. This year, the Braves have dropped off the top of the perch.

The good news is that BMS didn’t fall too far. The school situated on Johnson Avenue is still right near the top of the most recent standings.

In the latest rankings, BMS is ranked number three in West Virginia. Not bad considering there are 170 public middle schools in West Virginia that were ranked.

“If you’re in the top 25 it says something about your school, especially with 170 schools,” said Bridgeport Middle School Principal David Mazza. “When you’re number one there’s nothing like it, but we’ll take number three.”

The school finished with a ranking of 94.6, which was behind new number one John Adams Middle School out of Kanawha County (96.7). The runner-up this year was Suncrest Middle School (96.1) out of Monongalia County.

“Where we finished is a testimony to the teaching going on in this building. We have superior teachers and kids being raised by families with high expectations,” said Mazza. “Add to that the community support and you have three components that are critical.

“I want my community and my parents involved here,” he continued. “You see heavy elementary school involvement in most places and when they come to middle school here I ask my parents not to break away, to stay involved and they appreciate it. We have wonderful volunteers, boosters and others that allow us to be successful.”

The rankings were recently updated for the 2017-18 year. According to their Web site they use the West Virginia Department of Education assessment test scores in Mathematics, English Language Arts and Science.

Other data used in the rankings come from other sources. Those sources include the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education and the West Virginia Department of Education.

BMS has been in the top 10 since 2009. The rankings are as follows: 2009 (1st), 2010 (3rd), 2011 (2nd), 2012 (2nd), 2013 (2nd), 2014 (1st), 2015 (2nd), 2016 (1st), 2017 (1st) and this year’s ranking of third.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Bridgeport High School was ranked as the No. 2 high school in West Virginia. That story, which includes rankings for Johnson and Simpson Elementary, can be found by clicking HERE.
