Bridgeport High School’s Science Bowl team’s run for a state title came up a bit short, but not after putting a scare into the competition. The Indians actually were tied for the lead after the first day of the competition before ending the two day event out of the winner’s circle.

Despite not winning, BHS once again fared well on a statewide academic stage. Bridgeport finished fifth out of 22 teams in the competition held at the Mountainlair in Morgantown.

“We didn't get the number one spot that the kids were aiming for, but I think we did very well,” said Coach Barbara Judy.

For Judy, it was the final Science Bowl she will be coaching. And her kids did her proud.

After finishing the opening day on Friday with two of the four round robin matches under their belt, the Tribe had toppled Ripley and Wyoming East. Thanks to the wins, Bridgeport was even with Wheeling Park’s B team.

The Indians came back Saturday and got several more wins. The Tribe added wins over Capital and Wheeling Park B and then watched as positions were drawn for the double elimination rounds. Bridgeport defeated St. Albans, but then fell to Wheeling Park’s A team and Ripley in what Judy described as a “fairly close” round.

“The kids were a little down about losing, but I told them I was very happy that we got in the top five out of 22.  We were officially classed as a tie for fifth place,” she said.

Morgantown dominated the competition. The Mohigans A team finished first, while their B team was second. Wheeling Park A was in third and Ripley finished fourth. Bridgeport was tied with a familiar foe – George Washington – for fifth place.

Judy had nothing but words of praise for her team. Members of the unit, pictured above, include front row, from left, sophomore Noah Romay and junior Minahal Naveed. Back row members, from left, include senior Troy Pallay, junior Jack Funk and junior Alexander Bradley-Popovich.
