Johnson Elementary Students, Staff, Parents Thrilled with New School Look as Artist's Rendering Unveiled

While most days at any elementary school offers a different experience every day, today was pretty unique for students entering Johnson Elementary School. This morning was the first time that many of the kids got a chance to see what their new school will look like when it opens in 2018.

A rendering of the school was unveiled Thursday at a special meeting of the Harrison County Board of Education. The meeting was held at Bridgeport Middle School.

“We absolutely love it. It really takes your breath away knowing that everyone will be in that building in a matter of a year and a half,” said Holbert.

The rendering was part of a presentation Thom Worlledge of McKinley & Associates. The group is the lead architect on the new school.

While those at the meeting and members of the JES staff got to look at the rendering Thursday, many parents and students got a chance to see it today. Holbert said the excitement in the eyes of all is a good thing to see.

“The parents have come in, including PTA members, and the students are seeing it,” said Holbert, who said it’s on display on an easel at the school. “Everyone just can’t believe it.”

Holbert said, in particular, watching the reaction and getting questions from the students has been most enjoyable.

“The kids are excited and they’re asking where there room is,” said Holbert. “We have to tell them we’re not sure yet and that’s it’s still a little bit of time before we’ll know.”

The 65,000 square foot, two-story building, $16.7 million school is being funded through two sources. The SBA is providing $10.7 million, while the other $6 million are local funds that are the result of dollars provided by Harrison County taxpayers. The school will be situated on the property near Wayne Jamison Field that currently hosts a t-ball and c-ball field.
