While everyone has been waiting to hear about school being called off for other days this week or even more delays, here’s one that’s a bit different. School is back on for Friday, according to Harrison County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Manchin.

And there’s also news regarding other makeup days and the final day of the school year – as it stands now. First, however, a look at this week.

Friday was originally set as a curriculum development and outside school environment day for professional development of staff. What that meant was that there was initially no school planned for students on Friday. Now, that’s no longer the case.

“Friday will be converted into a regular school day,” Manchin said. “That day was built in to be utilized for missed days due to weather.”

Manchin said that the days for curricular development is key to continuing the professional development of staff. Because of that, it also has another component built into it – a delay if students are called back to school.

“There will be a three-hour delay,” said Manchin. “We do that so we are sure to have a time period to embed professional development.”

In a nutshell, school is back on for students Friday with a scheduled three-hour delay.

Manchin said there are other days that are built into the school calendar that will be used as potential makeup days if inclement weather forces school closures. And one of those days is Feb. 12.

“That was also on the school calendar for an off day for students, but it will now be a regular day with a three-hour delay,” said Manchin. “Again, that delay is being built in for professional development for staff.”

While the snow days are enjoyable now, they will have to be made up. May 25 was initially the final day of school and now May 26 and May 27 are regular school days.

“If there are no more school days, the last day of school will be May 27,” said Manchin. “We’ll be watching the weather to see if the calendar has any additional changes.”
