A single-vehicle accident along State Route 131 – Benedum Drive – on the straightaway past the Bridgeport Recreation Complex heading toward Jerry Dove Drive heavily damaged the vehicle in question and sent one of the passengers to United Hospital Center.

The accident took place shortly after 10 a.m. this morning. The call came into the Harrison County 911 center at 10:11 a.m.

According to Bridgeport Fire Department Captain Phil Hart, the female passenger of the vehicle refused transport for medical treatment. The driver of the vehicle, however, was taken from the scene on a stretcher.

“The injuries do not appear to be life threatening,” said Hart. “The accident appears to be the result of an underlying medical issue.”

The vehicle came to rest on its side off the roadway. It was nestled among dry and slightly heavy brush. Bridgeport Fire Department personnel were able to pry a door open to get the passenger out.

Bridgeport Police were busy keeping one lane of traffic open for motorists along Route 131. Delays at the time were minimal at best. Dan Riggs Towing was called in to remove the vehicle.

Lt. D.K. Betler said the matter is currently under investigation. He said Officer A.T. Lantz was handling the investigation for the department. The vehicle in question was a silver Chevrolet HHR.
