After More than Three Decades of Serving Residents of Bridgeport, One of Key Employees Stepping Down

For more than three decades, residents of Bridgeport and beyond have generally woken up on a cold and snowy morning and headed to their destination with little if any trouble. On almost every occasion over the last three decades, if a glass of water was needed, it was available.

While that may seem trivial, ask anyone who has dealt with road problems due to weather or has been without water for an extended period of time and they will tell you it is far from that. There are several reasons for things working smoothly the majority of the time here in Bridgeport.

One of those reasons is leaving today. After 33-plus years of employment with the City of Bridgeport, John Curtis is retiring. Although he started full-time on August 1, of 1991, he worked part-time prior to that. Regardless, that is decades of service to the community, most if it behind the scenes.

“I’ve worked with him for 27 years,” said Director of Public Works” Kenneth “Tiny” Grimes. “You can’t say enough good things about John. He’s dependable; just always here. Here is a guy for many times during his time with the city he’s put it before his own family in situations.

The dedication has earned him foreman status in the city’s public works department. It has also earned him the respect of his co-workers and others within the city.

“He is one of those guys that has put in so much overtime for so many things it’s hard to explain just how much he’s done. Even if you just consider snow removal while most people are sleeping it’s impressive what he’s done, and he’s been reliable every step of the way,” said Grimes.

Grimes said as of today, there are four individuals with close to that much experience, including himself. The number will drop to three after Curtis’ final day.

“This city will miss him,” said Grimes.
