After More than Three Years in Business, Restaurant in City Ceases Operations at Meadowbrook Mall

Although some of the businesses that have closed in recent years at the Meadowbrook Mall have been national retail outlets such as Payless Shoe Source that closed late last month, some are of the local variety. And some are in the food business.

For those that frequent the food court, they may have noticed an empty spot between Subway and T&L Hot Dogs. In late April, a business that had been in place for three years closed up shop.

After a more than three-year run, Meadowbrook Mall Marketing Director Robin Urquhart confirmed that Miskycha (pronounced miss-KEY-kuh) closed for good. The business announced its opening in January of 2016 and then opened for business in March of the same year.

While many restaurants claim to have a unique menu or a specialty niche, this one easily could back that up. The restaurant featured squeezed juices, such as papaya, strawberry, mango, passion fruit, purple corn and many other varieties. The restaurant also served pork and roast beef sandwiches, fruit salads and Peruvian appetizers, like empanadas and papa rellena.

Now, there’s one less option.

“I loved the food that they had,” said Joe Bell, the director of corporate communications for the Cafaro Company that runs the Meadowbrook Mall. “The owners worked it hard, but I think what it came down to was they had a lot of business with two people running it and it was a tremendous work load. We certainly wish them well.”

What’s next? Right now, there’s nothing definitive.

“We’re always talking to someone new. I haven’t talked in particular about that location with our real estate people, so I don’t know if there’s anyone specific they’re looking to line up,” said Bell. “What I do know is that there are potential tenants that are constantly being engaged. We hope to have announcements for the food courts and other parts of the mall in the near future. There’s still plenty of interest.”

According to the owners of Miskycha, they may reopen at an undisclosed location. The couple left a message thanking their patrons on their Facebook page saying they will review options and consider a new location.

Earlier this week, the mall did announce the addition of a new business. The virtual reality gaming store Planet X signed a lease and is expected to open in late summer.
