Afternoon Wreck on Worthington Drive Results in Fuel Spill, Heavy Damage to Sports Utility Vehicle

By Jeff Toquinto on May 08, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

For the second straight day, Bridgeport Fire and Police Department personnel responded to a fuel spill. Unlike the one Thursday that caused major traffic delays on Interstate 79, this one was in a residential section of the city and fire staff had what they called a “minor spill” contained.

The spill was the result of a single-vehicle accident on Worthington Drive. The call came in for the accident at 12:45 p.m.

According to Firefighter Donnie Lindsey, the driver of a silver Ford Explorer collided with a utility pole along the roadway. Along with the vehicle suffering severe damage, the base of the telephone pole was mangled and in probably need of maintenance. The impact was strong enough to force airbag deployment. Lindsey said there was no transport for medical reasons to the driver.

Traffic was being blocked off at the time as the fuel was being cleaned up. Lindsey said they were using a product called “oil dry” to take care of the matter. He indicated it wasn’t serious.

The matter is under investigation by the Bridgeport Police Department. Officer J.M. Frenzel is handling the investigation. Dan Riggs Towing removed the vehicle from the scene.
