BHS History Team Does it Again; Qualify for National Competition in Washington, DC

Another Bridgeport High School team has qualified for a major tournament. On Saturday at Parkersburg High School, the BHS History Bowl team was among the top two finishers in the state tournament event in Wood County to qualify for the National History Bowl.

The second place finish means the Indians do not have to take part in a second tournament where additional teams will look to qualify. That event will take place in February.

“I thought the students all did a great job,” said BHS Coach Barbara Judy.  “I was proud that they all made it into the single elimination.”

Bridgeport actually took two teams to the competition, and both fared well. Ten teams total were in the event. The only team ahead of Bridgeport’s A team in the final standings were the Big Reds from Parkersburg. Third place went to Nitro, while Saint Albans’ B team was fourth.

In addition to the team competition, some of the students took part in individual competition in the "history bee."  In this competition in the varsity division, Parker O'Dell and Danny Keough were in the top six finishers.

In the junior varsity division, Noah Romay took third place.  Along with Romay, the BHS A team is now eligible to go to the National History Bee and Bowl, which is held annually in Washington, DC the last weekend of April.

O'Dell, the A team’s high scorer, and members Minahal Naveed and Danny Keough defeated the A teams from Lincoln, Cameron, Charleston, Notre Dame and Nitro and the B teams from St. Albans and Bridgeport.  The team’s only loss was against the top-rated Parkersburg team.

With Romay leading the way along with teammates Amna Haque, Fisher Rector and Montana Martin, the B team upended the A teams from  Lewis County, and Nitro. The team fell to the A teams of St. Albans, Parkersburg and Bridgeport and the B team of St. Albans.
