BHS Principal DeFazio Confirms Work Stoppage to Continue Monday; School Play, Girls Hoops Canceled

As of 4:30 p.m. today, a pair of extracurricular activities involving Bridgeport High School have been canceled and the status of making them up is not known.

According to Bridgeport High School Principal Mark DeFazio, the school’s production of the play “Barnum” scheduled for Saturday and Sunday – all four shows – have been canceled. DeFazio also said the Class AA Region II, Section 1 game Saturday in Shinnston between host Lincoln and Bridgeport has been canceled.

“Everything has been canceled due to a work stoppage involving teachers and service personnel that will still be in effect Monday,” DeFazio said.

DeFazio said, at this time, he has no idea about making up either event or any future events that may be canceled due to a continuation of the work stoppage. The continuation of the work stoppage was just announced within the last hour.

All monies for the play will be returned in the event that the play is not made up, which may be difficult considering items that are often borrowed or rented and have a time frame for return. DeFazio said to contact the school after the work stoppage and if presenting a ticket, money will be refunded.

DeFazio said the decision to cancel the events has nothing to do with the Bridgeport High School administration. Instead, he said the decision was made at the Harrison County level.

"We were given a directive, as were all principals in Harrison County, that there would be no activities and the schools would remain closed at least through Monday from (Superintendent) Dr. (Mark) Manchin," said DeFazio.
