Bridgeport City Council Cancels Dec. 22 Meeting

Although executive sessions by Bridgeport City Council aren’t uncommon, announcements coming following the closed door sessions are less common. During the most recent meeting of the city’s governing body on Dec. 8, there was one announcement that took place once Council re-adjourned into regular session.

The second City Council meeting for December – scheduled Dec. 22 – has been canceled. The reason for the move was a simple one, said Council member John Wilson.

“A big reason, of course, is that when you look at the Calendar that’s Christmas week,” said Wilson. “WE reviewed issues before us and realized there were absolutely no items on the agenda that needed to be addressed immediately. There was nothing pressing, things seem to be moving forward in the areas we need to move them forward so the decision was made to cancel the meeting.”

Canceling of Council meetings right before the Christmas holiday – or even other holidays – is not an unprecedented move as it has happened many times before. Also, Council often moves meetings set on Monday holidays to Tuesday.

For those concerned issues may be missed that have a timely nature to them, Wilson said not to worry.

“We have the discretion to schedule an emergency meeting in the event an item needs immediate attention,” he said.

City Council meets the second and fourth Monday of each month. The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Bridgeport Municipal Complex. The meetings are open to the public.
