Bridgeport Emergency Personnel Respond to Vehicle Running into IRS Building on Chenoweth Drive

A rare call for a vehicle going into a building took place late this morning as an automobile collided with an office building along Chenoweth Drive. The driver of a white Nissan Altima ran into the Internal Revenue Service building at the top of Chenoweth Drive.

The call went out at 11:12 a.m. according to the Harrison County 911 log. Bridgeport  Fire Department officials said the female driver of the vehicle did not suffer life threatening injuries and signed off on being transported to United Hospital Center despite airbag deployment in the front of the car. There was just one passenger in the vehicle, according to the fire official.

According to Bridgeport Police Officer M.P. Hammond, the driver was planning to go to the IRS today even though the building was closed due to the Independence Day holiday weekend. He said the driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake while attempting to park and the front end of the vehicle ran into the building.

Hammond was handling the investigation. All of the damage sustained to the vehicle was to the front end of the car.

Along with Bridgeport Fire and Police, the Anmoore Emergency Squad responded to the scene. Bridgeport's Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) also assisted at the accident.

Most of the emergency providers had left the scene prior to noon. There was no traffic interruption due primarily to the location of the IRS building and that several of the businesses along that roadway, including the IRS, were closed.

There was no word on structural damage to the building. That assessment will come at a later time.

Editor’s Note:Top photo shows the Altima into the side of the building. Below, Officer Hammond gets a hug and a sucker from 3-year-old Charlyah Rancher whose mother was near the incident and said her daughter “loves police officers.”
