A call for a car fire on Platinum Drive late this morning proved to be just that as emergency responders showed up on the scene to see a sport utility vehicle largely engulfed in flames, Bridgeport Fire Chief Phil Hart said.

The call went out at 11:29 a.m. Bridgeport Fire and Police responded to the call.

“When we got there, the vehicle in question had its entire motor compartment fully involved. The flames had also moved into the passenger compartment,” said Hart.

The vehicle in question was a gold dark silver Kia Sorento. There was only one occupant in the vehicle and Hart said the individual left the vehicle and was unharmed.

“Along with the driver safely existing, there was no damage to any other property. I think I can safely classify the vehicle as being a total loss,” said Hart. “We were fortunate to be able to bring the fire quickly under control and extinguish it.”

Hart said the cause is unknown. He did say he was fairly certain that it started in the engine area.

Bridgeport Police handled the traffic flow during the situation. Dan Riggs towed the vehicle away.
