A building that formerly housed more than one Bridgeport restaurant that caught fire last week is being investigated for being “suspicious” in nature, according to Fire Department Captain Phil Hart.

Eight days ago – Monday of last week – the local fire department was joined by a crew from Anmoore’s Fire Department arrived in mid-afternoon after reports of a fire was reported at the structure that formerly housed Hank’s Deli. Hart said the crews noticed smoke from the back of the structure and slight smoke inside of it.

“The fire was quickly contained to the outside, the exterior of the structure. The damage, which was minimal, was to the backside of the building,” said Hart.

The initial estimate was that the damage was less than $1000. Officials estimated damages to be approximately $500 to $600.

“The fire appears suspicious in nature,” said Hart. “Although there is electric to the building, there was no electric in the area where it started.”

Hart said the matter is still under investigation. He said that it has been turned over to the Bridgeport Police Department.

The building is located at the top of the Home Depot Plaza, between Huntington Bank and Walgreen’s Pharmacy. For years, the site was home to Long John Silver’s before that business relocated to the Eastpointe Plaza in Clarksburg.
