The Bridgeport High School Quiz Bowl continued to show why they’re one of the strongest academic teams in the state with a recent strong showing at the Ripley Invitational. Although a small meet, the Indians finished in the top half of the event this past Saturday.

BHS finished in fourth place amongst nearly a dozen teams. The Indians had the finish despite competing with no seniors against a strong field.

“All the teams who came to the meet were strong contestants and losing to any one of them was usually close and with another set of questions, we might have won in that round,” said long-time BHS Coach Barbara Judy.

Bridgeport finished the morning round robin in third place behind Capital and University. After that, the Tribe went to the single elimination portion of the event and finished fourth after a setback to Ravenswood. There was also a setback to the Charleston Catholic A team. BHS did not compete against Capital in the competition.

“It was a smaller meet, but there was still some good competition,” said Bridgeport’s Jeff McCullough.

Teammate Danny Keough felt the team was closer to moving even higher on the list of finishers. However, he said it was a good event as the team moves closer to their final events of the year.

“I could have done better, but it was a well put together and organized meet and we had a lot of fun,” said Keough.

Along with Keough and McCullough – the team’s co-captains – Noah Romay, Alexander Bradley-Popovich and Emery Smith competed. Romay was the high scorer on the day.

Bridgeport did manage to get wins over several teams, including Winfield, Charleston Catholic’s B team.

“We were not the only team without seniors, but we were in the top four and I was very proud of the students being a good example of Bridgeport High's academic skills,” said Judy.
