The Bridgeport Police Department is asking residents to be on alert for what could be a could be a possible scam that’s taking place within the city.

According to Bridgeport Patrolman K.M. Burgess, he received a phone call Friday (May 18) from an resident describing a salesman coming to their residence. The salesman claimed to be from a local utility.

“The salesman knocked on the gentleman’s door and introduced himself as a salesman from Spectrum. The gentleman that called me said that everything seemed fine until he began asking questions to the gentlemen,” said Burgess. “At that point the salesman knew that he wasn’t going to get what he wanted from the gentleman and ended the conversation and left the residence.”

That wasn’t the only call coming in that day to Burgess. And the circumstances were extremely similar.

“On the same day I received another call from someone saying that they received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Mon Power. The person claiming to be from Mon Power asked if they knew about a service disconnect. The individual that called me said that they had a feeling that something was off due to the fact that the supposed Mon Power employee could not provide any other information about the account,” said Burgess. “They asked the person on the phone questions trying to verify that they actually work for Mon-Power and the person could not provide any answers and quickly hung up the phone.”

The calls continued Saturday. This time, Burgess said it could turn out to be a potential fraud case.

“When I arrived to the business the manager informed me that they had just received a call from someone claiming to be from Mon Power. The person on the phone with the business said that if they did not pay a certain amount of money that day then they were going to send someone to the business,” said Burgess. “At that point the manager informed the person on the phone that they were going to call the police so the person on the phone hung up.”

Burgess said due to the fact that the calls are similar and happening close together is cause for concern. Because of that, he’s asking residents to be on alert and contact authorities if there is an issue.

“Whoever is trying to scam people out of money might succeed if they happen to call the right person that believes their story. I don’t want to see anyone taken advantage of and would like to see the citizens of Bridgeport stay vigilant to potential scammers,” said Burgess.

If you have received a call such as this or if you receive a call such as this, call 911 to report that you may have been an attempted victim of a scam.
