Although no arrests have been made and Bridgeport Police are still investigating, law enforcement have released the name of the man that claims to have been shot just off Saltwell Road late on the evening of Oct. 28.

According to Detective Gary Weaver, the man shot was Howard Heflin, age not listed. Heflin is from the Worthington area, said Weaver.

“He was released from the hospital a few days after the shooting,” said Weaver. “We’re still following up on information. The investigation is still ongoing.”

According to Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker, who was at the scene the night of the shooting, there were two crime scenes. The first crime Scene was the Exxon Station on Route 73 or 131 at the intersection of Saltwell Road, which has the Subway attached to the building. The second crime scene was the Black Bear Express and Dunkin' Donuts just off the Saltwell exit of Interstate 79. The incident was reported at 10:10 p.m. that evening.

“(Heflin) claims he stopped at the (first Exxon) to help stranded motorists and they came up to him and hit him in the head. After that, they shot him and left,” said Weaver. “He was shot in the side.”
The only information Walker was given that evening prior to Heflin being taken to United Hospital Center was that he was attacked by a male. No further evidence was provided and has not been provided to the media since that time.

“We hope to have resolution on this matter soon,” said Weaver. “We’re waiting to get some information and lock down a few other things. We’re also doing some follow up interviews.”

There was some good news Weaver provided. He said police believe this to be an isolated incident.

Bridgeport Police are still seeking any information that the public may have. Weaver said individuals can call Detective Troy Rutherford at 304-842-8260.
