Although much of the public attention involving schools has been on missed time in the classroom and the cancellation of sporting events, another group that is usually full throttle in practice mode has been impacted by the snow by not being able to gather.

 

The Bridgeport High School Science Bowl team, which will compete for a state title this Saturday, has missed a ton of academic practice time due to the weather. While the snow impacted the amount of practice, Coach Barbara Judy doesn’t think it will impact the team’s chances Saturday.

 

“Our chances probably were not diminished by the snow.  The students are bright and motivated and I sent them an email with some links to questions that they can study,” said Judy.

 

Whether there is a corresponding issue with the lack of working together in preparation for the US Department of Energy’s State Science Bowl will be determined tomorrow. The students will gather at the Mountainlair in Morgantown to compete against others from across West Virginia.

 

Bridgeport qualified for the state meet by finishing second in the RESA 7 division competition. That event took place in December at the Engineer Technology Building on the campus of Fairmont State University. Morgantown won the competition. Members of the team finishing second were captain Troy Pallay, Ahmed Haque, Raymond Rector, Anna McKibben and Stephanie Thi.

 

Initially, only the top two teams from each RESA was invited. Judy said that was upped to three teams. Along with the Indians, Notre Dame from Harrison County will be participating.
