City Elementary School Students to be Recognized for Work Done on Art Contest for Bridgeport Calendar

Barring something unusual, business for Bridgeport City Council during their final meeting of October appears to be relatively light. In fact, there’s only one item of business listed for Monday’s meeting.

The Council will recognize several students from local elementary schools in the city. The students being honored are from Johnson Elementary, Simpson Elementary and Heritage Elementary and what they did will be part of a city distributed calendar for next year.

The recognition is for the winners of an art contest sponsored by the City of Bridgeport. It is being done as part of Bridgeport Municipal Government Week. For the last 22 years, the governor or West Virginia – this year being Jim Justice – proclaims the third week in October as “Municipal Government Week,” which means it’s a statewide proclamation as opposed to one for just Bridgeport.

“The city has never done anything for municipal government week and we are going to change that,” said City Clerk Andrea Kerr.

Kerr started the art contest to make the week more active. She sent schools a paper to send home with students describing the contest.

“The students had to draw their favorite place in Bridgeport. The students that participated turned their artwork in to the city,” said Kerr. “The artwork was judged and we picked the top 13 were chosen to be put into a 2018 calendar that the city will distribute.”

Kerr said the event was well received. She did say there was one thing that made the choosing the final 13 for the calendar difficult.

“All of the artwork was so good,” said Kerr. “We had such a hard time choosing.”

While there are no other items on the agenda, the meeting will include a report from City Manager Kim Haws and Mayor Andy Lang. There will also be a public forum near the start of the meeting for anyone wishing to address the city’s governing body.

The work session, according to Lang, won’t have anything specific. He said it will focus on a multitude of issues.

“Primarily, it will allow for discussion on several miscellaneous items such as the property along Route 131 (across from the entrance to the Bridgeport Recreation Complex) and an update on various items,” said Lang.

Lang said the possibility exists for an executive session. However, he said it would more than likely take place after the regularly scheduled meeting.

The meeting is open to the public. It begins at 7 p.m. and there is a work session at 6:15 p.m.
