City Officials Announce New Mall Store on its Way

With bankruptcies and store closings on a national scale seeming to be a more frequent occurrence, some good news was delivered recently at the Bridgeport Development Authority meeting. And that news deals with a new store coming to the Meadowbrook Mall.

During the March 13 meet during Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr’s general economic development update, she said a new store is coming to the 30-plus year-old retail hub in the city. That’s good news with the Toys “R” Us store near the mall property closing and recent news regarding bankruptcy reorganization.

“There is a new store going in, but they haven’t pulled their permit yet so I won’t mention their name until that time,” said Kerr. “It is an $188,000 renovation.”

The new business will occupy 3,321 square feet. Kerr said it will not be going into any of the area vacated when Sears went out of business. Kerr also addressed Sears during the same meeting. She added that during recent discussions with mall officials they were looking at all options for the former space, including dividing it into multiple units in the event another anchor store cannot be landed.

As for the store that is coming, Kerr did provide a little more detail.

“We actually have their plans for the renovation to their space,” said Kerr, who received the plans from the company March 12. “ … It is a retail based business that specializes in clothing.”
