City Police Investigating Break-In at Bridgeport United Methodist Church; Hundreds in Cash Stolen

The Bridgeport Police Department is currently investigating a weekend break-in at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, Detective J.D. Williams confirmed.

“Apparently someone made entry between (Saturday) after 7 p.m. and (Sunday) at 7 a.m.,” said Williams. “Someone at the church discovered the break-in in the morning. At this time, it doesn’t appear as if there is forced entry. We’re still investigating that.”

The church, located on Worthington Drive, is a city landmark with ties to Michael L. Benedum. Although there doesn’t appear to be any damage to the historic structure due to the break-in, there were items taken.

“The responsible party took $500 in cash and some checkbooks,” said Williams. “The investigation is still preliminary, but we do have some persons of interest that we’re looking into at this time.”

As always, the Police Department would welcome any information from the public that may have noticed anything suspicious during the aforementioned time frame or anyone that may have any knowledge of the crime. Williams can be reached at 304-848-6144. Individuals can also anonymously call the tip line at 304-842-6149.
