Unlike past years when the City of Bridgeport’s date for Trick or Treat seemed to draw as much debate as what costumes youngsters should wear, Bridgeport City Manager Kim Haws said the decision to hold it this year was pretty clear cut.

 

On Monday, it was announced at the Bridgeport City Council meeting that Trick or Treat festivities will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 – the actual day of Halloween. In the past, many municipalities have avoided fall weekend dates for Halloween for fear of youth becoming a bit rambunctious or also the problem of Saturday Trick or Treating colliding with a West Virginia University football game.

 

“Saturday night was obvious this year for a number of reasons,” said Haws. “Plus, we try every year and did this year, to coordinate with other cities and it seems like everyone is going for the same time frame. This is the way it fell.”

 

Bridgeport will go from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. While some may have thought the city would avoid a weekend by going Thursday or perhaps going Friday, neither date was convenient. Thursday evening will see WVU playing a nationally televised game at Texas Christian University and Friday night will see Bridgeport hosting Fairmont Senior in what could possibly be a battle of the state’s top two teams in Class AA. With that, plus the other municipalities going Saturday, it was an easy choice.

 

“I think things are going to go extremely well. I have a lot of confidence in our young trick or treaters and their supervisors,” said Haws.

 

As usual, Haws said the Bridgeport Police Department will be on patrol to assist. He also said the city’s Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) will also be out to help make the evening enjoyable for everyone. Anyone with questions can contact Bridgeport City Clerk Andrea Kerr at 304-842-8233.
