City's 2014 Asphalt Paving Program Wrapping Up; Additional Roads Added

Despite frequent rain and less than cooperative weather, the asphalt paving of streets in the City of Bridgeport will be completely finished Tuesday – if they aren’t already done. City Engineer Tom Brown said he anticipated everything to be cleaned up and finished by Tuesday for the 2014 asphalt paving program.

“We’re hoping today,” said Brown. “If it’s not, everything should be done by Tuesday. Fortunately, we were able to do more paving than was initially scheduled.”

Thanks to getting the streets included on the 2014 paving schedule, Brown said there was the ability to do additional paving today. Last week, Brown said it became apparent a few more streets could be done and those streets were added.

On Friday, city officials released information saying that Briarwood Road and Tanglewood Road would be paved. Both are situated in the Briarwood Subdivision.

Workers with J.F. Allen were doing the work. The company submitted the low bid for this year’s paving project at just over $359,000.

“What makes this work is that Council gives us a little bit of flexibility on adding to the list in these situations. We usually have a little bit extra to work with unless one of the roads on the lists sees us run into a major problem,” Brown said. “That rarely happens.”

Because of that, residents in the Briarwood subdivision had to be inconvenienced today. The good news is that they won’t be inconvenienced next year.

“Both of the roads we paved today would have been first on the paving list next year,” said Brown. “Instead, they ended up being last on this year’s list.”
