Defending State Champion BHS Quiz Bowl Team Starts Season off Strong

Another one of Bridgeport High School’s state championship teams was back in action this past weekend. And this team, despite being in complete rebuild mode, fared well.

The Indians took a pair of Quiz Bowl teams to Morgantown Saturday to take part in University High School’s annual meet.  A total of 13 teams competed, including a pair of teams from Pennsylvania and two middle school teams.

Capital High School from Kanawha County was the winning team. The Cougars upended Bridgeport High School’s A Team twice and also topped the B team. Despite those setbacks, the A Team still managed to finish as runner-up.

The Indians only losses on the day were to Capital. The A Team managed to beat John Marshall’s A and B Teams, Southern Fulton (Pa.) B Team, Westwood A and B Team (a Morgantown Middle School), and also beat teams from Lincoln and Parkersburg South.

“The ‘next man up’ that football and baseball teams use could well be used with Quiz Bowl.  Our entire A Team graduated last year, but the next ones up did a great job at Morgantown,” said long-time BHS Quiz Bowl Coach Barbara Judy. “Bridgeport High School is well represented at all Quiz Bowl competitions and can hold their heads up high.”

Captain Danny Keough was Bridgeport’s high scorer on the day. He was joined on the A Team by Fisher Rector, Noah Romay and Alex Bradley-Popovich.

The B Team finished the day 1-8. The victory came against the John Marshall A Team. Team Captain Amna Haque was high scorer.  She was joined by Sierra Shreves and Zachery Kimble.

Bridgeport will look to continue to improve in its next event Nov. 1. The Quiz Bowl event will be at Nitro High School.
