Final Stages of Jamison Field Turf Project Under Way

By Jeff Toquinto on June 14, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

For those wondering if the installation of the replacement FieldTurf at Wayne Jamison Field would be done sooner rather than later, the good news is that it appears that it could be more on the sooner side of things. Although many variables could change that, an individual invovled with the project pointed out that a walkthrough on the project with school officials could take place well before the weekend.

Initially, Bridgeport High School Principal Mark DeFazio was told the project would be done by June 18 or June 19, which is this coming Saturday and Sunday. Those dates, he said, would almost certainly be met as the crew doing the BHS project has to be in Chicago on June 20 to begin another field.

However, work has progressed rapidly at Jamison Field. On Monday, the infield material - the ground rubber material that provides the field with the spring - was being spread. Much of the detail work was either in the finishing stages or complete.

The work also had done something else. It had began to draw curious spectators.

It's all part of a $700,000-plus replacement of the turf and track at Jamison Field. While Bridgeport High School raised all of the funds needed for the initial installation of the turf and the six-lane all-weather track, the Harrison County Board of Education stepped up when this time around when the replacement projects were determined to be needed. The BOE is footing more than $400,000 of the project.

It was also learned last week that the BOE is footing the bill for another project. New 70-foot light poles, installed by Musco Lighting, will be put in place. There will be four poles instead of six at the field as the new lights will not only work better and longer, it will also be concentrated directly onto the field.

Four old light poles will be removed. Two old light poles will basically be cut in half and be utilized for the field's sound system.
