When baseball action comes to the Bridgeport Recreation Complex this coming Saturday, those involved with the competition are already guaranteeing there will be plenty of fireworks – literally.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Dan Cava’s Toyota World, an afternoon and evening celebration of Fairmont State University’s baseball team’s recent decision to use the Bridgeport Recreation Complex as their new home field will conclude with a massive fireworks display. It’s all part of the first-ever “Family Day” event being hosted by FSU and the Greater Bridgeport Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“We are fortunate to be able to host the Fairmont State University baseball team at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex; it’s a win-win situation.  The FSU baseball team has a nice facility with built in fans and our residents have the opportunity to enjoy free collegiate-level baseball,” said GBCVB Executive Director Michelle Duez. “Bridgeport is a strong baseball community.  I hope fans come out to support the Falcons and enjoy the planned festivities.  Dan Cava Toyota World is sponsoring fireworks at dusk after the second game, which should be spectacular.”

The festivities begin at 3:45 p.m. Saturday. There will be a first-pitch ceremony to kick things off. Dr. Chris Courtney, Fairmont State University alum and a surgeon at United Hospital Center will throw out the first pitch. Courtney serves on the FSU Board of Governors as is also the team physician.

"By partnering with the Convention and Visitors Bureau and play our games in Bridgeport, it allows us to showcase Fairmont State University to a broader audience in North Central West Virginia," said FSU Athletic Director Tim McNeely. "We have a large student and alumni population in Harrison County and the entire region and this is an opportunity to go beyond Marion County and give a glimpse of Fairmont State athletics in a different and nearby venue.”

The Falcons will be taking on Notre Dame College in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the Rec. Complex. As mentioned, admission is free to all fans. In addition to the fireworks, there will be a free tailgate for all fans and kids, including free hot dogs. Kids that come to the contest will have the opportunity to run the bases. The Fairmont State Alumni Association will also be on hand, giving away t-shirts and other prizes.
