After decades of service in law enforcement, including more than two decades with the City of Bridgeport Police Department, former Deputy Chief Randy Hartley was recognized at something that was among his final acts on the force.

Prior to leaving the force this week, Hartley helped assist in bringing the West Virginia Chief of Police’s Conference to Bridgeport. The multi-day gathering was held at the Bridgeport Conference Center at Charles Pointe.

During the first day of the event, Hartley went from one of the organizers to one being recognized. During the afternoon last Friday, Hartley was recognized for his service to the city and to law enforcement.

Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker presented Hartley with a shadow box. The box included Hartley’s gun that was engraved, his badge, a gold patch and information etched into the glass among other items.

"I knew I was going to get my gun because that's one of the thigns that in the state code the civil service department says by way of state code you can get your duty weapon. I even figured it would be engraved, but this shadow box was absolutely unbelivable," said Hartley. "I was speechless when I looked at it," said Hartley. "It was absolutely perfect. I was honored and humbled that it was given to me at the conference. It was a good sendoff, especially with 80 of your peers who gave me a standing ovation. It was pretty humbling."

Members of Hartley’s family were on hand as he was recognized for his service.

Hartley’s law enforcement career began in 1994 after working with what is today the 911 and as a volunteer firefighter in Shinnston. He was hired for former Clarksburg Chief of Police Tom Durrett and worked there until 1997 when he came to Bridgeport.
