Get Your Fruit On: Annual BHS Alumni & Friends Strawberry Sale Under Way

By Jeff Toquinto on April 09, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

If you think fresh grass, baseball and shorts are the only signs that spring is at hand, then you’ve forgotten the annual Bridgeport High School Alumni & Friends Foundation Strawberry Sale. And once again, it’s already under way.

According to Foundation President Alan Dye, the orders are already piling up and there’s plenty of time to get your order for strawberries in place. The sale will run through April 18 for those who want to guarantee they can have some of the fresh strawberries that will soon be delivered.

“Our delivery day has become a traditional delivery day,” said Dye. “We deliver the Thursday before Mother’s Day, which is May 8. The delivery is geared to those businesses that order and those who place significantly large orders.”

The individual pickup site will remain the same. On the same date – May 8 – those who have pre-ordered can pick up their strawberries at the concession stand at Wayne Jamison Field from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. That is also the location to pick up strawberries if you did not order any in advance.

“We order a limited number of extra strawberries for those who may have forgotten to pre-order,” said Dye. “Those are on first-come basis. I think every single year, with perhaps the exception of one year, we’ve sold out of the extra strawberries we order.”
The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the alumni group. The other fundraiser is the annual BHS Hall of Fame dinner; along with donations the group receives annually.

“Through the proceeds raised, we’re able to give out scholarships,” said Dye. “We’re going to give out upwards of $30,000 in scholarships this year, which we believe will be the biggest ever. The scholarship total keeps growing and that’s something the Foundation wants to see continue.”

The scholarship winners will be announced next month. The winners will be named at the BHS Senior Assembly on May 14.

For those looking to order, there are two numbers to call. Contact Charlotte Cathell at 304-842-3474 or Fay Jamison at 304-842-6510.

A half flat, which is six pints, costs $14. A whole flat, which costs $22, gives you 12 pints. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment. The checks, Dye said, should be made out to BHS Alumni & Friends Foundation.
