Heavy Rain Possibility Has Bridgeport, Entire Region Under Flash Flood Watch

While heavy rains that blistered Bridgeport and the surrounding area have moved on, those rains coupled with the possibility of even more this afternoon and particularly this evening could lead to flooding. According to WDTV Meteorologist Pierce Legeion, Bridgeport and large parts of North Central West Virginia are under a flash flood watch until 1 a.m. Saturday.

“The reason for that primarily rests with the heavy batch of rain that we had first thing this morning,” said Legeion. “You’re looking at scattered rain storms this afternoon and early into the evening. The thing to look out for is the possibility of a second batch of heavy rain; probably a little after sunset and right into evening.”

This morning’s rains were particularly troublesome for Ritchie County. Legeion said areas of that county saw between 1 and 3 inches of rain this morning and are facing the possibly of more rain today and into the first hour of Saturday.

Bridgeport and surrounding areas could see between 1 and 3 total inches depending on whether heavy downpours occur. He said the local region, including Bridgeport, received roughly a half an inch of precipitation this morning.

“If you see downpours, particularly heavy downpours, they will be in isolated areas,” Legeion said. “Once we get past midnight I think the chances for flooding will go away. Things should quiet down at that point.”

Legeion said the weekend is looking good, although there are chances for isolated and passing storms Saturday and Sunday. For the most part, he said, it will be more seasonal weather with highs forecasted to reach 83 degrees.
