Highly Popular City Event Scheduled for Thursday is Going to Recreation Complex; Now County Wide

For those wondering if the City of Bridgeport was going to have another “Shred Day” event to get rid old bills, documents and other paper-related items, the answer is yes. And for those wondering if it will ever involve communities outside of Bridgeport, the answer to that is yes as well.

According to Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr, the city will be hosting the sixth annual “Shred Day” tomorrow, (Thursday, Nov. 15, which is America Recyles Day). The event will run from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

This year, the event won’t be held in the side parking lot of the Bridgeport Municipal Complex. Instead, the event will be held at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex. The reason for that relates to the changes in the format.

“We’re doing things a little bit different,” said Kerr. “We’re partnering with the Harrison County Solid Waste Authority and Resolute Forest Productions to handle the event.”

Because of the partnership, the event will expand. Kerr said the “Shred Day” is open to all residents of Harrison County.

It’s also open to another group as well.

“In the past, we excluded businesses because they would often bring so much stuff that it was a problem. Businesses will be allowed to bring their items for removal at this event,” said Kerr.

The partnership helped allowed the program to be funded through a grant. The city’s role was to provide the location and help with the logistics.

“The Solid Waste Authority contacted me and from there we determined utilizing the complex to host the event would be best,” said Kerr. “They were aware of the great turnouts we’ve had in past years so it was decided to do something different, which is to open it up county wide and to businesses.”

The event is the sixth one, but in its fourth year. The city hosted two events annually the first two years and have continued to host it.

“It’s really exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said Kerr.

One thing will remain the same – you may want to get there early to assure you get your documents shredded.

“We’ll be going until 1 p.m. or until the units we have for documents are full. We have always filled up our trucks at past events for the most part right before we’re supposed to finish and once or twice we didn’t quite get full,” said Kerr. “In every situation the community has utilized this day heavily so people may want to get there early.”
