Late Night Emergency Siren Going Off at Airport Not Related to Serious Issue, but Instead a Malfunction

For those wondering why the emergency siren was going off shortly after midnight, it wasn’t for an emergency. Instead, according to North Central West Virginia Airport Director Rick Rock, it was something else.

“It was a failure of the equipment,” said Rock. “It’s old and a fuse blew, which led to the incident. When equipment gets old things like this, unfortunately, start happening. We’re looking into it further.”

The siren isn’t unusual for those in the area. It’s tested, Rock said, every morning around 7 a.m.

The purpose of the siren is for any serious emergency that may be taking place. Rock said that it could be utilized if there’s imminent danger, perhaps from a troubled aircraft, that could impact the surrounding area.

“The good news was that our security office was alerted and from there, staff, I believe, took care of the situation,” said Rock.

The alarm has malfunctioned before. It’s possible the item will be discussed at a future meeting of the Benedum Airport Authority, the airport’s governing body.
