Lightning Likely Cause of Afternoon Power Line Fire Near Simpson Creek Covered Bridge; No Injuries

By Jeff Toquinto on August 15, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

A quick afternoon thunderstorm, similar to several in the past few weeks, didn’t produce any vehicle wrecks in Bridgeport. However, there was some damage that took place.

According to Captain Rick Todd of the Bridgeport Fire Department, the company responded to a call for a powerline fire along Meadowbrook Road – just outside of Bridgeport. The area in question was a power line just near the Simpson Creek covered bridge.

The call went out at 2:22 p.m., according to the Harrison County 911 log.

“One of the fuses caught fire and that and the line involved were on fire,” said Todd. “We assume it was caused by lightning as it happened during the storm that went through the area.”

Todd said there wasn’t much that could be done other than to sit and wait for it to burn out. Todd said staff was on standby in that area for about 15 minutes until it burned itself out.

“There was some power out in the area, but we believe it’s intermittent,” said Todd. “After it was determined to no longer be a danger, we were able to leave.”

Now, the repair of the line and power pole in question is up to Mon Power. Todd said they had been contacted about the situation. Todd added that outside of damage to the pole itself or equipment on the line owned by Mon Power there was no adjacent damage. He also said there were no injuries.

The fire did cause one issue. The traffic signal at the intersection of Barnett Run Road – the entrance to Burger King – and Johnson Avenue/Meadowbrook Road was left out and flashing on caution.
