Major Work on Retaining Wall at Bridgeport City Pool Not Impacted by Last Week's Horrid Weather

Although the nasty combination of weather slowed down work on the six-figure retaining wall project at Bridgeport City Pool, the massive opening wasn’t impacted by the heavy rains, heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures that were part of an eventful period of weather last week.

“The weather didn’t cause any problems,” said Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton. “Even with that large opening and all that water, I think the fact that the contractors are putting in drainage down by the footer that they’ve dug to probably helped the situation more than hurt anything.”

The project started last month. Cook Brothers Contracting is doing the work on the near $150,000 effort that will stabilize the retaining wall behind the diving area at the pool and against Simpson Creek.

As the weather turned foul last week, a lay person that would have noticed the area being worked on may have been concerned that water, snow and an ongoing freeze and thaw cycle could be problematic. After all, the hole contractors have dug out as part of the work is substantial.

“The hole is about 12 to 13 feet deep and the entire trench will eventually be eight feet wide,” said Burton. “They were back at work this morning and I haven’t heard anything as far as any issue that they workers encountered.”

The project is aimed at stabilizing the wall, which will make the pool deck secure. Burton said once the work is done exploration about potentially installing a new slide at the pool will be done.
