More Snow, Potential Record-Low Temps on Way

After this week’s blast of winter and the previous arrival of Winter Storm Jonas, many may be tiring of a February that has entered like a lion and has continued to roar. The bad news for those individuals is that the roaring on the weather front isn’t over.

According to WDTV Meteorologist Jill Szwed, more snow is on the way for today and early tomorrow morning. And the weekend is shaping up to produce some record-shattering numbers as well on the temperature front.

“The snow we’re going to see today likely won’t arrive until late afternoon and maybe in the early evening hours,” said Szwed. “This system has an arctic front driving the snow in that will arrive.”

Szwed said that type of system could create some problems beyond the one to three inches of fluffy snow that it could produce. She said the system has the ability to create squalls where the fast-moving wind will further reduce visibility and create quick bursts of rapidly accumulating snow.

“The accumulation will be very similar to what we saw for much of the earlier portions of this week,” she said.

Snow should taper off by Saturday in the late morning hours and afternoon. However, the arctic front has another treat in store for the Bridgeport and North Central West Virginia region.

“This weekend, we will see the coldest air by far of the winter season,” said Szwed. “The highs will only be in the teens on Saturday and Sunday and on Sunday morning we are looking at the possibility of a new record low. Without a doubt, we will be challenging for a new record low.”

Szwed said the low for that day is 0 for Clarksburg. She said it will be definitely in that range Sunday morning. Even worse, wind chills will make the temperatures feel well below that. Although North Central West Virginia – and Harrison County – are not currently under wind chill advisories, Szwed said that wind chills will be problematic and individuals need to keep that in mind.

“The area will see sub-zero wind chills and it’s advisable to avoid being outside and if outside you don’t want to be exposed as the conditions will be in place for frost bite and other problems related to exposure to the cold,” she said.

As for rumors of another major storm system early next week, Szwed said some problematic weather is on the way. What isn’t known is just how bad or how much of a problem the weather will be.

“We are watching this system that will arrive early next week, but right now, we’re uncertain about the track of the weather system in question,” said Szwed. “At this point, we’re not yet able to determine the type of precipitation. It looks like snow Monday with a wintry mix Tuesday and perhaps snow, turning to freezing rain and sleet and then back to snow on Wednesday. All of that could change because we need more data to see just what may happen.”
