New Marquee Digital Sign Going Up in Front of Bridgeport High School

Even after all of these years, Bridgeport High School Principal Mark DeFazio is still learning lessons. In this particular case, the veteran educator is re-learning a lesson he likely heard as a youth.

“Sometimes going the cheap route isn’t necessarily the best route,” said DeFazio.

DeFazio’s lesson came courtesy of the marquee sign that is situated outside of Bridgeport High School and along Johnson Avenue. The digital sign that was put in place several years ago was meant as a way to provide the public information along with school-related messages. While it’s done that, it’s not done it well.

“That one may not be that old, but it’s outdated. It just isn’t proper for what we need,” said DeFazio. “If anyone’s to blame for that sign it’s me. I didn’t do a very good job of making that decision because I rushed into it and I can more than likely tell you I went with what was probably the cheapest option.”

The new option won’t be cheap and the new sign will be much bigger. DeFazio said it’s going to be eight foot long and more than three feet wide.

“It’s going to be better in every way,” said DeFazio of the sign that will be done by Nevco Company, the same company DeFazio said is responsible for the new digital scoreboard at Wayne Jamison Field.

And one other way it’s definitely going to be better – the cost. The funds needed for the marquee, DeFazio said, were secured by State Senator Sam Cann. DeFazio said the new sign costs $25,000.

“I’m not sure of the timeline, but you’ll see it soon,” DeFazio said.
