The Bridgeport Police Department’s new organizational structure is officially complete. At Monday’s Bridgeport City Council meeting that became the case when Mayor Robert “Bob” Greer swore in the fourth sergeant to the department.

During the session, Greer administered the oath to Christopher W. Barto to become the final sergeant to be appointed. The appointment came after the April 10 swearing in of Bridgeport Police Officers A. Scott Floyd, L. Mark Rogers and Brett W. Stewart to handle sergeant positions.

The procedure was something veteran police officer and Bridgeport Chief John Walker was happy to see take place.

“This gives us a sergeant on each shift and one on the detective bureau,” said Walker. “We’re extremely happy because this gives us supervision 24/7 and 364. It will be a great thing for us.”

Barto was unable to take part in the April ceremony due to recovering from injury. Walker joked that Barto did it so he could have “his own ceremony.” Afterwards, Walker had words of praise for Barto and the others who will be taking over new roles in the department.

“Chris has been a patrol officer since he’s been here and he’s done a great job. He’s a proactive type of officer, which is what we need,” said Walker. “The sergeants that we have are all extremely capable and we believe they’ll serve the community well.”
